Despite being sick this week, I am still enjoying prepping for the holidays. Jason and I got our tree on Saturday night (Nov. 29!) which was the earliest either one of us has ever gotten a Christmas tree. Since we're going to be gone quite a bit visiting his family up North and in Tahoe at the end of this month, and because trees are so pricey these days, we wanted to have plenty of time to enjoy it before taking it down. My grandma gave me her Victorian village stuff on Thanksgiving so now I have tons to choose from, as we also have a small village collection of our own. We're supposedly going to do some tree decorating tonight but I'm still not feeling so well so maybe tomorrow night instead. Since I'm the Activity Director at Vista del Monte, I have 6 trees at work to decorate (did one today) so I have to be careful not to get burnt out. The residents and my co-workers ask me about that all the time. I think someone said the other day as I was going through a garage full of Christmas storage, "I'll bet you just go home and don't even want to think about Christmas." In fact, the opposite is true. I get home and do some decorating around the house or do some online shopping, watch food network holiday specials or turn on the holiday music. I love driving home from work past the houses all dressed up with lights. I can't WAIT to turn on my Mannheim Steamroller CD's, sit on the living room floor surrounded by gifts and do some wrapping.
'Tis the Season for Giving
Jason and I also decided this year that we're going to donate to one of our local dog rescue groups, K-9 Pals, which is actually where we adopted our dog, Kobe. We think it's important to remember the fuzzy members of our society during the holiday season, too, so we're going to buy some large bags of dog food, some bags of dog treats, hit up some thrift stores for some blankets and donate the items to the shelter. My mom and I are also going to sponsor a person with developmental disabilities through a group called Angels Bearing Gifts. We did this last year and really enjoyed it so we're going to do it again. I also organized a Harvest Food Drive last month at work and organized a Toys for Tots drive this month. I guess I'm in the giving spirit. I would challenge and encourage you all to give to a charity of some kind this holiday season. I know this is a hard time for everyone but it's during these hard times that it's most important to remember others who are less fortunate. One can, one extra toy, an extra bag of pet food (especially to those who lost everything in the recent fire) can really mean the difference. Even cleaning out your garage and donating bags of unwanted items to the Salvation Army or another local shelter can brighten up someone's maybe otherwise dismal holiday.
'Tis the Season to be Jolly
As soon as I get to feeling better, I'll work on this one. :)
