We're officially mini-farmers! The U of R has three acres of land that they have turned in to a community garden, open to alumni, students, and faculty. Each plot is 10ft x 20ft, water and tools are provided, and the rent is $10 per season! Per season, such a bargain! You can find us at plot B7.
We will be growing: carrots, lettuce, beets, corn, broccoli, squash (including butternut), green onions, pumpkins, and swiss chard. Some of the veggies will be planted in one or two weeks, others we'll plant this weekend. {I've done some online research and we have drawn up a planting schedule in accordance to the farmer's almanac.}
For now, we are going to focus on growing our veggies in our plot and consider planting other things later. After all, we have plenty of flowers, succulents and herbs growing on our patio (not to mention our dwarf meyer lemon tree, which has blossoms on it!!)
We are so excited --- such a fun opportunity and we'll be saving money once the veggies start coming in! I'll post a picture of our plot once we see it this weekend. Woohoo organic produce!!
